Ecash Breaches the App Store as Fedimint Hits iOS

Justin announces the launch of Ecash App across iOS, Android, and desktop platforms—bringing transparent Chaumian federation custody to mobile hardware alongside major updates from Amethyst and Coracle.

The release arrived without fanfare but marks a quiet watershed for decentralized custody: Ecash App is now live in Apple's App Store and Google Play, giving mobile users a native, feature-rich Fedimint wallet on iOS, Android, macOS, and Linux. As developer Justin announced: Big news! Ecash App is now available for iOS! Ecash App is a feature-rich, transparent Fedimint wallet, now available on iOS, Android, Linux, and macOS. (source)

Ecash App, originally published to Zapstore before clearing mainstream store reviews, packages federation discovery, multi-mint accounting, and Lightning gateway settlements behind a minimalist interface. The expansion to iOS brings Chaumian privacy into Apple's ecosystem without custodial compromises.

The mobile milestone coincided with substantial updates across the native Nostr client ecosystem. Vitor Pamplona released Amethyst v1.16.0, expanding the client's scope while aggressively shedding binary weight: Amethyst v1.16.0: My Fitness, BOLT12 Payments, and a Leaner Core (source). The release integrates BOLT12 offers directly into profile payment rails with automatic fallback to BOLT11, fixes Blossom server uploads, trims roughly 40 MB from distributed builds, and introduces a dedicated training dashboard drawing from both Android Health Connect and kind 1301 telemetry events.

On the web and desktop side, hodlbod published Coracle version 0.6.37 (source). Rebuilt atop Welshman 0.10, the release brings end-to-end encrypted file attachments in direct messages, per-account event caching, social preview tags, and user toggles for link previews to minimize client bandwidth.

Institutions & Custody

Block Applies for Federal Trust Charter to Hold Bitcoin

Jack Dorsey's Block moves to establish "Builders Bank & Trust" under OCC oversight.

In a major institutional development reported by BTC Prague, payments company Block has submitted an application to the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) seeking a national trust bank charter: Block has applied to the OCC for a national trust bank charter. Builders Bank & Trust would custody bitcoin under federal supervision. Uninsured. No deposits, no loans. Still pending approval. (source)

The filing establishes a dedicated, federally supervised custody entity that eschews fractional-reserve lending and traditional deposit operations. The move prompts renewed debate across the network over whether institutional trust charters complement or compromise Bitcoin's foundational peer-to-peer ethos.

Commerce, Food & Merchant Adoption

Oslo, Norway

Exodus to Sovereign Rails After Swiss Bitcoin Pay Breach

Merchants replace compromised custodial gateways with zero-fee open software.

Following security breaches at Swiss Bitcoin Pay and rising European regulatory scrutiny under MiCA, Sondre and Satoshiconsult have begun migrating Norwegian merchants to sovereign, non-custodial Point-of-Sale setups. Among the first to transition is traditional Oslo rug merchant Rødseth Orientalske Tepper (source).

Sondre explained that switching to open tools eliminates percentage fees while restoring direct on-chain and Lightning custody, pledging to migrate more merchants from the hacked Swiss Bitcoin Pay (0.21% fee the first year, then 1.00% fee after that) to 0.00% fees with accepting bitcoin (source).

Why I'm Still Building on Liquid: The Battle for Bitcoin Covenants

In an extensive essay, OceanSlim dissects the September 6 L-BTC minting exploit, evaluates sidechains from Ark to Stacks, and argues why BIP 119 (CTV) and OP_CAT must come to Layer 1.

Addressing the recent multi-million-dollar inflation bug on Blockstream's Liquid Network, OceanSlim published a candid assessment of why developer incentives remain locked onto federated sidechains in the absence of native Bitcoin covenants: On September 6, someone minted roughly 4,000 L-BTC out of thin air and pegged it out for real bitcoin. It was the biggest crypto theft of the year and it happened on the chain I've spent the last year building on. So this is a good moment to write down why I chose Liquid, whether the exploit changes that, and what I actually think about the alternatives. Short version: it doesn't change it. (source)

Reviewing alternative scaling proposals—including Drivechains (BIP 300/301), Rootstock, Stacks, Ark, BitVM rollups, and Taproot Assets—OceanSlim concludes that sidechains are fundamentally workarounds for expressive primitives missing on base-layer Bitcoin. He urges node runners and miners to evaluate BIP 119 CheckTemplateVerify (CTV) and OP_CAT ahead of the March 2027 signaling window: The reason people build on Liquid, Stacks, Rootstock, Citrea, or Alkanes is that Bitcoin won't let them build on Bitcoin. Every one of those is a workaround for a missing primitive. Until covenants land on L1, developers will continue building on the few environments that support them today.
