For years, decentralized software development has lived in a curious contradiction: developers build permissionless protocols while coordinating their code inside proprietary centralized platforms. That compromise took another step toward obsolescence today with the alpha rollout of Signed, a dedicated desktop collaboration suite built directly on Nostr Git and the Grasp Protocol.

Announcing the initial release, reya laid out a roadmap aimed at displacing commercial git hosting services with cryptographic keys and relay distribution: I've released an alpha build of "Signed", a collaboration platform for Nostr Git or Grasp Protocol. If you're bored today, please give it a try and send me some feedback or bug reports. It's still very early and rough, my vision is a fully batteries-included git client as well as a collaboration platform.
The release coincides with growing experimentation around sovereign development tooling across the network. Developer arbadacarba published both a git forge wrapper, gittr, and an Android client on Zapstore, while arguing in a separate essay that command-line interfaces should give way to sovereign graphical tools and model context integrations rather than forcing everyday developers to navigate terminal arcana.
With Signed shipping native binaries for macOS, Windows, and Linux—and a web version on the near horizon—the shift toward protocol-level code hosting is moving from an experimental curiosity into an accessible everyday reality.

The philosophical foundation remains strict interoperability across client boundaries. In a brief remark on protocol design, fiatjaf emphasized: Interop is all that matters. Static kinds favor interop. That commitment resonated across recent group discussions, with fiatjaf adding of community collaboration tools: Thank you. I like Coop very much but it has a million bugs, so I can't use it. Now I'm hopeful the Gigi effect will make it usable for me again.
The broader push for reliable group communication was highlighted by chad, observing that Armada and Vector solve nostr DMs and make group chats possible.
