The Pacing Doctrine: Anthropic Urges the State to Brake the Clock as the Open Network Reaches for Open Weights

Dario Amodei warns democracies must match autocracies or face catastrophe; David Sacks rejects a corporate cartel while open-weights builders refuse to yield.

The corporate lobby for centralized artificial intelligence arrived at an overt political milestone this week. As media host Nat Brunell noted in her network broadcast, Anthropic’s CEO says AI is moving too fast and wants government help slowing it down. The plea for regulatory guardrails immediately provoked sharp dissent across Silicon Valley, with technology investor David Sacks countering that while individual companies are free to halt their own releases, they shouldn’t form a cartel.

The geopolitical rationale behind the corporate appeal was laid bare by Diego Valley, who circulated excerpts from Amodei’s latest strategic thesis. In it, the frontier lab executive argued that democratic nations cannot afford unilateral pauses without state coordination: Pacing within democracies will be limited by the lead that US companies have over authoritarian regimes, chiefly the Chinese Communist Party. Slowing down beyond that margin, Amodei contended, would allow authoritarian models to pull ahead, depriving open societies of the breathing room we need in order to pace effectively.

Across the Nostr network, observers viewed the sudden escalation of institutional concern with sharp skepticism. Commentator Nadia denounced the synchronized warnings: The orchestration of these AI doomer groups is disgraceful. Meanwhile, open-source engineer redshift urged decentralized networks to lean into their uncensorable nature rather than courting government favor: Yeah. We gotta clank harder :) He added: Also spread the narrative that we are permissionless and open. But then again, we get the wrong eyes on Nostr lol. The AI safety people will be furious.Nat Brunell dispatch · Diego Valley citation · Nadia commentary · Evan Kaloudis note · redshift dispatch

Sidechain Autopsy

Bitcoin Never Broke: Liquid Federation Details Sunday’s 4,000 BTC Drain

An automated peg-out with an online key turned a software flaw into real coins; 3,400 have returned as Blockstream warns of legal reckoning.

The mechanics of Sunday’s unprecedented sidechain incident came into sharp focus as BTC Prague published a detailed technical autopsy. Roughly 4,000 BTC left Liquid's federation wallet on Sunday. 3,400 came back a day later. About 598 are still out. Crucially for the wider monetary ecosystem, the breach touched none of Bitcoin’s underlying cryptographic consensus: Bitcoin never broke. The sidechain's software did, and an automated peg-out with an online key turned the bug into real BTC.

While federation operators managed to recover the majority of the coins through negotiation and transaction halts, the remaining balance leaves sidechain security assumptions under intense scrutiny. Blockstream leadership rejected any framing of the drain as an ethical test or whitehat demonstration, delivering a blunt warning reported by Nat Brunell: Blockstream to Liquid hackers: “It is theft.”BTC Prague bulletin · Nat Brunell coverage

Overland Dispatches

Five Years in 'Bebe': GlobalTraces Survives Wreck in Kazakhstan

Overland travelers GlobalTraces reported the heartbreaking loss of their expedition home after an accident at an under-construction Kazakh toll booth. Watching our home, Bebe, being recovered after the accident in Kazakhstan was painful in the extreme. Seeing a truck this size, that you’ve built your life around for the last five years, all bent and twisted and out of shape, cut really deep. An unpainted concrete plinth sliced open a tire, sending the vehicle rolling into a post at 30 km/h: Fortunately we all walked away (although I had concussion and whiplash and a night in a Kazakh hospital after some x-rays and CT scans.) Sadly Bebe is a write off 😢Recovery note · Accident report

The Question of What Human Beings Are For

Gigi surfaces Charles Eisenstein's reflections on artificial intellect and the erosion of subjective communion.

Gigi spent much of the day excerpting Charles Eisenstein’s contemplative essay on generative intelligence and subjective human purpose. Eisenstein warns that unchecked synthetic content threatens to displace human contact: If this trend continues, legacy forms of communication will exist mainly as AI-to-AI media. The crisis, he argues, is fundamentally relational: Because AIs lack a subjective experience to share, they cannot meet the need for communion. In a prescient passage on the future of knowledge, Eisenstein observes that as understanding becomes unnecessary to produce results, scientific education and training would lose its pragmatic motivation. — AI media · Communion · Pragmatic motivation

Monetary Tradeoffs

Transparent Hard Money vs. Private Digital Cash

JPaq parses the deliberate design decisions distinguishing Bitcoin from Monero.

Addressing recurrent debates over privacy enhancements, JPaq laid out why Bitcoin and Monero are complementary instruments rather than direct competitors. Bitcoin deliberately chose verifiability over hidden ledgers: Bitcoin also makes a deliberate tradeoff: The blockchain is transparent. That transparency is a feature, not a flaw. While Monero provides fungibility by default, it does so at the cost of auditable money supply and liquidity: Neither design is accidental. They make different tradeoffs to accomplish different things.Full analysis

Classrooms and Planetariums: Bitcoin in Chiang Mai

Grassroots educational drives expand across northern Thailand's universities and scientific institutes.

Grassroots educational initiatives continue to gain ground across Thailand, with organizer Jimmy Kostro reporting strong momentum in northern academic hubs: Thailand 🇹🇭: The Bitcoin Learning Center is back at Chiang Mai’s leading university this week. The initiative enlists local community educators to present Bitcoin directly to students and faculty. Later this month, the outreach moves to a public stage: In less than two weeks, we’re hosting a free seminar on Bitcoin as freedom money at the planetarium. NARIT only holds 200 seats.
