PEER-TO-PEER NETWORKING

FIPS Protocol Enables Direct Node Meshes Across NAT

A new peer-to-peer overlay network designed to eliminate domain registration, central routing, and firewall friction entered active field testing across the Nostr ecosystem.

running FIPS lets your system join a mesh of other FIPS nodes, gives you a new IP address, and lets you communicate over the mesh with any other FIPS node. There is no domain, no routing configuration, no firewall or NAT configuration, etc. No permission needed.

Developers began deploying the protocol to bypass restrictive residential network topologies. Operator notmandatory demonstrated tunneling secure administrative sessions directly to home hardware:

Running FIPS! now I can ssh into a dev system at home even though it's stuck with a private IPv4 address behind my stupid ISPs NAT. The setup links machines across the internet without exposing public ports: With FIPS I'm able to assign my home server a self generated npub and talk to it from anywhere. This is how the internet is meant to be, peer to peer, private and permissionless.

Early benchmarks show minimal performance degradation under production workflows: I'm not seeing any noticeable latency running multiple shells and editors over my ssh tunnel between the office and home.

SECURITY ADVISORY

BITCOIN MINING & CONSENSUS

Luke Dashjr Exits OCEAN as Hashrate Plunges 96%

The veteran Bitcoin Core developer steps down as chairman and director to launch CONVOY, following divergent visions for non-custodial mining pool decentralization.

The struggle over Bitcoin block template decentralization reached a dramatic fracture this week as OCEAN co-founder Luke Dashjr severed ties with parent company Mummolin, sparking a collapse in the pool's computing power.

Luke Dashjr is out at OCEAN. Resigned as chairman, CTO and director on 29 Aug. Mummolin repurchased all his equity.

The parting was attributed to different visions for the future of Bitcoin mining. Dashjr immediately revealed plans for a rival venture: He is starting CONVOY. OCEAN's hashrate fell 96% in August.

The sudden fallout leaves observers questioning the resilience of independent block creation: What does this do to template diversity?

For independent home miners running hardware like the Antminer S21 XP, pools remain the only economic path to steady returns. Analyst JB | Onchain highlighted the fundamental mechanics compelling miners into collective syndicates:

If I pointed it at Bitcoin alone and waited to find a block, I'd be waiting about 65 years. That's why mining pools exist. Everything else is details.

Twenty people at an office put in five dollars a week. No single ticket is likely to win, but twenty tickets win more often than one, and when one hits everybody gets a cut.

My machine sends its work to Ocean, and so do thousands of others. When any one of us finds a block, the reward splits across everybody who was working.

DISPATCH FROM KYIV

Drone Strike Hits Government Quarter as Terry Yiu Rewrites SatsPrice

Software development in wartime continues amidst aerial bombardment in central Ukraine. Developer Terry Yiu reported a missile and drone impact adjacent to his family's daily commute:

An hour after dropping my wife off at her office, a Russian drone struck the Security Service headquarters one minute down the street. I could hear the explosion from home. She, her team, and her office are fine.

Despite the disruption, Yiu has spent his parental leave restructuring Bitcoin tooling across desktop and mobile platforms: While on my paternity leave, I've been rewriting my SatsPrice app with the help of Claude Code.

The unreleased (new) version uses Kotlin Multiplatform and targets all those platforms plus other desktop operating systems and the web. I was able to reach near feature parity at ~10x the speed with Claude Code.

FREEDOM TECH ROOTS

Carl Dong Recalls the Overnight Firewall

A retrospective on Bitcoin Core contributor and Obscura VPN creator Carl Dong traced the formative events behind his commitment to censorship resistance.

His dad ordered a National Geographic subscription over the first dial up connection in the house, just so the family could see the outside world.

The window into open media snapped shut almost without warning: The day before he was sharing clips with his friends, the next day there was no YouTube, no Facebook, nothing.

That rupture crystallized a clear operating ethos for Dong: Technology should further the sovereignty and freedom of individuals. He has been building on that ever since.

P2P LIQUIDITY ESCROW

Mostro Node v0.18.7 Tightens Payout Rails

Non-custodial Lightning peer-to-peer exchange Mostro shipped an architecture update introducing tighter liquidity constraints for routing nodes.

New payout safety rails: in-flight payouts are now capped per destination and node-wide, so one destination can't tie up the whole node's liquidity.

Payout routes now bound their total timelock, not just the last hop, and user payout invoices are capped at 144 blocks instead of 432 — funds stay locked for less time.

The release also detailed cryptographic authentication safeguards for trade disputes: Opening a dispute on Mostro 🧌 puts a real person on the case, the admin of that node, or a solver they've assigned. Both you and your counterparty get a unique token to confirm you're talking to the actual admin, not an impostor.

Sovereign Debt Crisis & Macro Pressures

BOND MARKET ROUT

Sovereign Yields Surge to Multi-Decade Highs as US Debt Tops $40T

The bond market had a week. Institutional capital faced intense volatility across major sovereign debt instruments as interest rates touched levels unseen since before the 2008 global financial crisis.

US 10Y: 4.82%, last seen 2023 … US 30Y: 5.29%, last seen 2007 … UK 10Y: 5.25%, last seen 2007 … Japan 10Y: 3.00%, last seen 1996 … US federal debt just passed $40T.

Against this structural sovereign stress, corporate balance sheets and sovereign treasuries expanded hard-asset reserves: spot ETFs took in $3.52B in August, Strategy bought 4,603 BTC, El Salvador hit 7,762 BTC.

MERCHANT CIRCULAR ECONOMY

Blink Integrates BTC Map Directly Into Wallet Directory

Blink released an update embedding the global BTC Map merchant database natively into wallet interfaces via an open interoperability standard, eliminating the friction of browser redirection when spending Bitcoin locally.

The deployment comes as community circular networks expand: in Nairobi, one urban settlement logged 3.78 million satoshis circulating across 11 community projects, demonstrating resilient bottom-up adoption.

THE COMMON RECORD

Vannevar Bush, Memex Trails, and the Pocket Glass

Author Gigi surfaced excerpts from Vannevar Bush's seminal July 1945 essay As We May Think, reflecting on the human imperative to organize personal knowledge archives:

There is a new profession of trail blazers, those who find delight in the task of establishing useful trails through the enormous mass of the common record

Bush's concept of associative knowledge trails anticipated decentralized information graphs by eight decades:

It is exactly as though the physical items had been gathered together from widely separated sources and bound together to form a new book. It is more than this, for any item can be joined into numerous trails.

Gigi contrasted this historical optimism with the degradation of modern consumer computing platforms:

The mind leaks outward - and it always has. Writing, numbering systems, and maps are not external aids to thought; they’re components of thought itself.

That externalized cognitive environment has increasingly fallen under the administrative control of proprietary corporate platforms: having been brainwashed enough by Google, banks think I cannot be trusted to do banking on a computer I own while doing it on a small piece of glass that I keep in my pocket is "safe."
